The Black Dog Mission...

The goal of Black Dog Analytical is to provide superior grit analysis service along with providing the grit community information about grit sampling and analysis, grit characteristics, and publish data and research conducted by Black Dog Analytical.

What is Grit?

Grit is very hard to classify as many agencies and manufacturers have a different definition of what "Grit" actually is.   

According to the EPA..."Grit includes sand, gravel, cinder, or other heavy solid materials that are “heavier” (higher specific gravity) than the organic biodegradable solids in the wastewater.  Grit also includes eggshells, bone chips, seeds, coffee grounds, and large organic particles, such as food waste." -EPA 2003

Many conventional theories about grit are based on particle shape and specific gravity.  This can be misleading since 1) grit particles are not uniform in shape or size and 2) the specific gravity of grit is not standardized in the industry or well characterized.  

Since there is no such thing as standard grit, each facility requires on-site evaluation and analysis by professionals to characterize and identify the grit for that location....enter Black Dog Analytical!
